Meta Cloud API vs WhatsApp Business App: Which One Does Your Business Need?

The Business app in one paragraph

The WhatsApp Business app is free and runs on a phone. It suits an owner or a very small team: a business profile, a catalogue, labels, quick replies and a few linked devices. It is built around people typing on a phone.

The Cloud API in one paragraph

The Cloud API is Meta's hosted interface for businesses. Messages go through software rather than a phone, so many agents can share one number, templates can start conversations, messages can be sent at scale and systems can react to events.

Side by side

• Team access: the app supports a few linked devices; the API supports many agents through a shared inbox.
• Outbound at scale: the app broadcasts to small lists; the API sends approved templates to opted-in segments.
• Automation: the app offers simple away messages; the API supports chatbots, routing and integrations.
• Cost: the app is free; the API has Meta's per-message charges plus a platform fee.
• Setup: the app takes minutes; the API needs a business account, verification and a provider.

Signs you have outgrown the app

• More than two people need to answer the same number.
• Chats are lost when someone leaves.
• You want to send campaigns to more people than the app allows.
• You need leads and chats in a CRM.

Moving across

Moving a number to the API changes how it works, so plan the move. Decide what happens to the existing chat history and the phone app, and test with a secondary number first. Our team can walk through the steps.
